I chose the internship as a way to study English in a foreign country. The reason for this is that I had two things mainly I wanted to do during my stay in the U.S. One is to be able to speak English as natural as I can. And the other is to know how the
business in the U.S is through the internship. My main job in my company was mainly to translate materials, documents or whatever should be translated. Actually, it helped me improve the skill to translate naturally and know a lot of English words I didn’t know until then.
Regarding private life, I tried to socialize myself in American Society as much as I could. Especially, San Francisco is called “Melting Pot” which means the society is so diversified. Therefore, I could communicate with people from different backgrounds.
And I lived in start-up house through almost all of my stay in the U.S. Thus my roommates motivated me a lot and made me realize how important connecting with people is. Eventually, It led me to make a lot of friends all over the world.
I am sure my experience in the U.S broadened my mind, seeing the world globally.
Even after I go back to Japan, I should keep remembering the lessons I learned in the U.S.

I have taken a gap year this year and had worked as a Japanese assistant teacher for 8 months. I decided to go to Melbourne, Australia, because I wanted to learn foreign culture and the English language from native speakers and also I didn’t know much about Japanese language and culture. I had never been to foreign countries and there were no Japanese in the towns I had stayed thus it was extremely hard for me to be there at first actually. However, lots of people supported and took care of me so much. As a result, I gradually had come to be used to their culture and of course, to their English as well. I tried lots of things as much as possible and one day I realized that ‘mistakes are proof that I’m trying.’ It definitely changed my mind in going the right directions to get to my goal. My job was to help students in their pronunciations, check how correct their spellings and grammars were, set listening and oral exam papers. Also practicing a lot of flashcards, to marking their exams and even deciding on their scores etc. These tasks taught me how responsible educators are and how hard people (especially social workers) manage their time.
